Batik Pekalongan – An Innovation to Compete in Global Markets
Batik is a craft that has a high artistic value and has become part and parcel of the culture of Indonesia (especially Java) since time immemorial. Indonesia batik was first introduced to the world by President Suharto, who was wearing a batik at the UN Conference. At this time in Indonesia alone there are many areas very famous as a producer of batik shirt, one of which is the town of Pekalongan.
It is not known exactly when in Pekalongan batik began to be known but is estimated to have existed since about 1800. In fact, according to information recorded in the Ministry, batik motif was created in 1802 as a small tree motif of clothing material. But the heyday of batik is estimated to occur in the period 1825-1830 at the time of the Diponegoro war or war of Java.
As a result of this war forced the royal family and his many followers who leave the kingdom. They are looking for new areas that are safer and many of them scattered to the west and east of the island of Java. There, they then developed batik as a livelihood. One of the areas that still exist are Pekalongan. Over time, Batik Pekalongan have evolved considerably in comparison with other regions.
Finally, batik Pekalongan fused with community life is the breath of life everyday citizens Pekalongan. Nevertheless, similar to other small and medium enterprises in Indonesia, batik businesses are now facing a transition period. The development of an increasingly complex world and the emergence of new competing countries, like Malaysia and Vietnam, forcing the batik industry to immediately improve its competitiveness.
If it fails to pass through this transitional period, batik may only be remembered for generations to come through the history books. At that time, the pattern of the batik artisan work is still greatly influenced the agricultural cycle. During the time of planting or harvesting rice, they are fully working in the fields. However, in between planting and harvest time, they work entirely as a handyman batik. But times have changed, in Pekalongan batik workers are no longer dominated by farmers. They came mostly from local young people who want to make a living. Their lives may be entirely dependent on the batik work.
The issue was, in the form of a visible decline in competitiveness of the product selling price higher than the selling price of similar products produced in other countries. In fact, quality products that produced country better than any competitor product Indonesian businessmen. The cause of these problems vary, ranging from low productivity and skills of workers, lack of initiative entrepreneurs to innovate products, to the old infrastructure supporting machinery production process.
Therefore, the Indonesian government is expected to act immediately to help batik entrepreneurs in order to still exist and produce works better. Slowly but surely batik is now experiencing rapid development, more and more demand for baju batik products from within and outside the country to answer all the criticism of its quality. Innovation committed by employers are also more visible because now they not only produce bajubatik, but has started to produce other products with raw material of batik cloth, such as kaos batik, batik dress, kebaya, batik bags, sarongs, etc..
